Bruce Nauman made the video below in 196, calling 'Pinch Neck'. It features a two minute sequence of him pinching his own neck and mouth areas. The video is conceptualized as a performance, Nauman is acting in front of a camera meant to be viewed by an audience. The 60s were a time when movies like this were a nuance, and artists were just dabbling in this new canvas. His performance shows the face in front of the screen, just as is customary of a person on film. However Nauman performs it differently first by placing the camera in a close up of his chin area. Then his acting is raw, unordinary, and possibly even ugly. The camera is usually used to capture beauty and tell a story, communicate straight forwardly. This film manipulates that communication, creates an abstract imagery.
These concepts are what I tried to accomplish in my video. My film is a scene from Dirty Dancing between two characters, Baby and Penny. Baby is filling in for a dance performance while Penny gets a secretive abortion. While Baby is an inexperienced dancer, she is talking through her various moves and positions she will have to remember. Penny is helping her, thankful to her, and worried about her upcoming procedure. I have posted the transcript below. A friend and I act out the scene within a concept inspired by Bruce Nauman.
Baby So I just keep my shoulders down, my head up, my frame locked, stay on my toes. O what if I forget the steps
Penny
Pull up, watch your frame, and remember let him lead you
Baby
I’m afraid I’m going to forget to spike get dizzy and fall on my face. No im doing it, don’t look at my feet, keep my head up, my eyes open, the tension in my arms, my frame locked, stay pulled up
Penny
